What is Plant-Based Meat?
When the phrase plant-based meat is mentioned, the first image that usually pops into a person’s head is a table filled with vegetables and mock meats that can be found in local vegetarian food stalls. However, that is not all. The taste of plant-based meat can seem to taste the same as per what actual meat tastes like. Therefore, confusion can occur to those who are hardcore meat eaters. Intrigued? Let me tell you more.
Is the taste of plant-based meat that real?
Yes, currently the two (2) major players in the Plant Based Meat Industry are Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat. Impossible Foods received its fame after introducing impossible burger to market their Plant- Based beef patties which is made from soy protein and has the same taste and texture as real beef.
The reason why their patties taste so close to real beef is because their scientists used plant-based heme along with fermented genetically engineered yeast which helps to create the feel of traditional beef. Beyond Meats however, created their own version of the burger patty called Beyond Burger. Their way of making plant-based meat is blending peas, rice and mung bean for protein cocoa butter, canola and coconut oil which makes up for the healthy fat content found in the patty. Beyond Burgers plant-based meat patty is so convincing because it is able to bleed like real meat.
All of these qualities of the plant-based meat are seen in a Channel NewsAsia show called “Talking Point”(link to episode). In one particular episode, the host Diana Ser speaks on how plant-based meat is an up and coming food culture.
You will be able to notice people who define themselves as hardcore meat eaters, shocked to find that they are unable to tell the difference between plant-based meat and real meat. However, there were a few who were able to tell the difference. Which is a subtle indicator that plant-based meat was not an exact replica of real meat. Nevertheless, the results were shocking.
That’s all fine but does it really make that much of a difference to my health?
According to studies, the consumption of red meat can cause heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, and the list goes on. Besides, livestock produces 14% emission of the world’s greenhouse gasses and it’s farming causes mass deforestation which all contributes to global warming.
In an episode of the Dr. Oz show,(link to episode) four (4) participants who loved eating meat were put on a 3-week plant-based meat diet. After the 3 weeks were over, participants showed lower blood pressure, which dropped by 10 points, cholesterol levels having very good improvement and weight loss of 10 pounds (4.5 – 5kg).
Wow, but in the videos, everything is so expensive.
